PEOI December 2011 Newsletter

December 12, 2011

Greetings to all PEOI volunteers:

Our major work at PEOI should be to write courses, and some of PEOI’s volunteers have done superb writing, such as Kishori Mundargi (faculty #9) in Programmin in C, Minh Vo (faculty #551) in her two pharmacokinetcs courses, and Punam Kumar (faculty #3036) in Introduction to Botany. While I do hope that PEOI’s volunteers will continue on this brilliant path, PEOI can’t pass by the opportunity of importing open education content that is already full written and of acceptable quality. Of course, importing content is only a first step that must be followed by additions of PEOI’s several learning tools, such as assignments, summaries, class discussions, review and test questions: this must be done by us PEOI’s volunteers.

In previous newsletters I have reported the progress PEOI has been making in importing content from several sources such as Connexions and Flat World Knowledge, both of which have a sizable collection of worthwhile teaching. It give me pleasure to report that, today, importing from Flat World Knowledge has been significantly improved. What used to take days, now takes minutes. The first course to be imported from Flat World Knowledge in such a rocket speed manner is “International Business” shown below as handled by Najwa Mouline (faculty #8361). I am most eager to import many more courses now that it is so easy. But one of you, PEOI’s volunteers, must take responsibility or starting PEOI’s learning tools, just as Najwa did. Thus, I urge you to visit Flat World Knowledge at www.flatworldknowledge.com (aw well as other sites), and see if there is a course that you would want to further develop at PEOI: then please tell me so I can import it.

The success in importing courses from Flat World Knowledge was unfortunately not duplicated in importing some open content from MIT, which is in pdf files. PEOI has imported with no problem MIT open courseware that was in HTML pages in the past. But Dr. Gilbert Strang’s Calculus course that Roza Aceska (faculty #8387) had planned to complete at PEOI, is not letting itself be imported easily. The problem is aggravated by the fact that course pages are embedded in images of scanned textbook pages placed in chapter large pdf files. To extract the text, an optical character recognition (OCR) software must be use. All the OCR software that I tried so far produced poor results because equations and special characters normally present in mathematical writings were not recognized, and because graphs were not extracted. If anyone of you has a suggestion (other than going to commercial packages) on how extract the text from such files, I would be very grateful for a more promising direction.

Thank you for all this good work. It should be mentioned that this work is only the one recorded when authors, editors, translators and other volunteers are online, make use of PEOI’s procedures, and their work is recorded. It is known that twice as much work is carried out offline, which is not recorded, and we thank those who put in all these efforts.

WHAT PEOI IS WORKING ON NOW

Imported course page often contain material such as footnotes, references and exercises that need to be transfered to other locations to fit into PEOI’s course structure. Some of this content transfer has now been automated, and more is likely to be necessary. If you notice anything that does not look right in imported course pages, please help me to improve these pages.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

Please tell me if have located an open education course that you recommend should be imported to PEOI.

PEOI November 2011 Newsletter

November 25, 2011

Greetings to all PEOI volunteers:

PEOI’s news this month is that PEOI’s recruitment was dismal in October 2011: both, the number of new volunteers and the number of new  students dropped to levels not seen since 2006. This is related to problems in PEOI’s volunteer opportunity announcements which were not placed online for several weeks by Online Volunteering administration because objections to the wording in the announcements. This problem was touched upon in PEOI’s previous newsletter. Fortunately, PEOI’s announcements have been resubmitted to comply with Online Volunteering recommendations which PEOI embraces and believes are major improvements.

The drop in student registration being simultaneous with the drop in volunteer applications revealed that the two are closely correlated. This suggests that Online Volunteering is THE major source of new students for PEOI. This was not fully understood up until now. Once again PEOI expressed its deep gratitude for the incomparable assistance that Online Volunteering provides PEOI.

The importance of Online Volunteering for student recruitment also shows that we are doing an awful job promoting PEOI by other means. Once again, social media promotion of PEOI appears all the more essential. Every PEOI’s volunteer is urged to take part in this promotion. An easy and meaningful first step is to use the links to Facebook and twitter present at the bottom of PEOI’s home page.

New students attracted to PEOI through Online Volunteering tend to be those that register. Nevertheless, PEOI’s website traffic statistics show that the number of visitors to PEOI in October did not decline but grew in October compared to previous months, and show that most visitors come to PEOI through search engines looking for explanations that PEOI’s courses provide. Consequently, continuing to develop course content that is accurate, up-to-date and unique must be the way PEOI can continue on playing a growing role is serving those in search of open education. But other promotion would certainly also help. Marketing experts are invited to share with me ideas about what else can be done to attract students as well as volunteers.

Other new developments:

New courses started or taken over in October 2011:
– “Linux System Administration” by Michael Olafusi (faculty #8350) in English

As in the past, this newsletter will cover

– what PEOI is working on now.

PEOI will be importing a large number of new courses. Sources of open education can be found in “Potential course”. If you would like to work on a course that can be imported to PEOI, please let me know which it is.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

As mentioned above, the only way PEOI can fulfill its mission of providing knowledge free of charge is by insisting on quality of that knowledge. I urge all of you volunteers to make your writing, translation, illustrations or whatever you do, as good as it can be. That may take more time and effort, but it is the only way for PEOI to succeed, and for you to be happy with your work. Thank you.

PEOI October 2011 Newsletter

November 3, 2011

Greetings to all PEOI volunteers:

PEOI is going through some unusual difficult times. Of course, PEOI is not alone in that: people in many countries are also facing difficulties. Thanks to you volunteers, PEOI exists to provide some assistance to these people, and PEOI’s difficulties are not related to money but precisely in having its assistance efforts impeded. First, for the past several weeks, for some yet to be determined cause, student registration at PEOI has not been functioning. Consequently, students could not study and take tests. Student registration and testing statistics were showing a slow down, but I could not suppose that the registration procedure which had worked for twelve years had developed a bug all of a sudden. It is thanks to maneka Goonesinghe (staff #6316) that the problem was identified. The student registration procedure has now been fixed. But, this shows how important it is for you to report problems encountered in PEOI’s operations.

The other difficulty PEOI is facing, is in volunteer recruitment. As most of you know, PEOI’s primary source of volunteer recruitment is UN Online Volunteering. Not long ago, Online Volunteering had changed the rules for posting volunteering opportunities. PEOI has complied with the new rules. Yet, some of PEOI’s volunteer opportunities are not published as they should be: consequently, many potential volunteer do not know about what needs to be done at PEOI, and do not join PEOI as in the past. It may be necessary for me to ask you to petition Online Volunteering not to delay publication of PEOI’s volunteer opportunities. I will let you know about this in next newsletter.

PEOI must develop an alternative volunteer and student recruitment avenue through social media websites, as maneka Goonesinghe (staff #6316) and others have recommended. First steps have been taken in direction by having a presence at Facebook and Twitter as you can see at the bottom of PEOI’s home page. The Facebook and Twitter links have been set up thanks to the excellent HTML skills of Georgina Bulteel (staff #6280). Further steps have led to setting up a Social media promotion group (#169) to discuss among us what should PEOI’s strategy should be. All of you who are experienced in social media use, are invited to join the group to formulate this strategy. But obviously, the real effectiveness of social media use will depend on all of us in taking part in the actual promotion of our PEOI’s cause on all social media websites. Please join as friend, send messages and place PEOI on other social media website. If you believe helping PEOI is worth your while, then make this known. You can expect a great deal more about you people are doing in social media in future newsletters.

WHAT PEOI IS WORKING ON NOW

All PEOI’s procedures used by students and volunteers will need to be tested and verified. As mentioned already, your input is invited.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

PEOI is facing difficulties. As always, the only way these difficulties can be overcome is with your help. We all count on you. Thanks.

PEOI September 2011 Newsletter

September 27, 2011

Greetings to all PEOI volunteers:

This newsletter does not any major news, but a series of diverse small items to report. First, I want to apologize for my lateness in answering some of your messages or clearing some registrations. This is due to telephone and internet interruptions since hurricane Irene devastated a portion of Schoharie county in upstate New York, where my country house is located. It has been three weeks that my internet there is not working.

Another small item pertains to the distribution of PEOI’s newsletter which will now take more time to reach you. This is because the hosting server has advised PEOI that the August newsletter has been barred as spam by some of your internet service providers, and has threatened PEOI of suspending all PEOI’s outgoing email unless the mailing is not spread out over time. The reason for this problem is that the numbers of PEOI’s students and volunteers have been growing so fast (as can be observed in the statistics below). PEOI has more that 8,000 student and more than 5,000 volunteers: this is a lot of messages. Of course, these messages are not spam

Jean Paul Gagnon has been placing some interviews on YouTube, which you can view at http://www.youtube.com/user/JeanPaulRGagnon?feature=mhee. He will use these interviews in his course in political science that he has been developing at PEOI. Authors in this discipline are welcome to cite or link to these interviews. If you have video material that can be useful in PEOI’s courses, placing it on YouTube can be an effective way of making it available to a wide audience. It can also be useful to promote PEOI and attract students if PEOI is mentioned in the video.

A student has requested a supervisor for his studies in Financial Analysis at PEOI. Please let me know if you are interested and qualified to act as instructor in this subject, and earn a negotiated fee for your service.

Other new developments:

Thank you for all this good work. It should be mentioned that this work is only the one recorded when authors, editors, translators and other volunteers are online, make use of PEOI’s procedures, and their work is recorded. It is known that twice as much work is carried out offline, which is not recorded, and we thank those who put in all these efforts.

WHAT PEOI IS WORKING ON NOW

PEOI should be using social media such as Facebook and YouTube. If you have ideas on how to do that, let me know.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

The news that PEOI’s newsletters can be deemed spam is obviously disturbing. But it is also gratifying because it shows how much PEOI has grown, thanks to you. And PEOI can only grow if each of you take part in its growth. PEOI’s course development has still a long way to go. So please stay with us. Let us finish our work. Thanks.

PEOI August 2011 Newsletter

August 5, 2011

Greetings to all PEOI volunteers:

In the past, PEOI’s August newsletter had been skipped. This year it is necessary to circulate this August newsletter because of several announcements.

The first announcement is about potential earnings opportunity for PEOI’s volunteers, and is the first of its kind in PEOI’s history. Mathias Njoya, a student at PEOI, has written to PEOI asking for a supervising instructor for studying Programming in C IT151EN. As stated in “Students” section, supervising instructors are entitled to receive a fee for the service they provide to a student: see “Students” section at PEOI for more details. The fee is negotiable, depends on the extent of service delivered, and is entirely outside the purview of PEOI. However, since a referral was asked, PEOI will refer students only to a qualified PEOI’s volunteer. Thus, if you are interested to provide such service, please contact me so that, if your CV shows experience in teaching C programming, I can give the you student’s email address.
The second announcement is less pleasant. Thanks to information provided by Edith Eddy Castela (staff #6163), it has been discovered that a bug in “Upload images” procedure has caused newly uploaded images not to be properly recorded in PEOI’s image data bank in the past three weeks
approximately. If you have uploaded an image recently, please visit “Upload images” to verify if your image is listed in the roster for the course and chapter where it belongs. If it is not there, kindly upload the image again, and let me know if there is any further problem.

Lastly, as mentioned in previous newsletters, a method for creating a large number of test questions is being developed at PEOI with the “List concepts” procedure, in particular. What this procedure does is dissect the sentence of a concept into a set of elements (such as subject, verb, adverb, object). Then, the elements are assembled in as many as twelve different questions. The questions thus created can later be edited or discarded. Designing the algorithm for dissecting elements out of a sentence requires linguistics skills. If you have such skills, please join in improving how “List concepts” works. Remember, that test questions and automated tests for student knowledge assessment, are absolutely crucial at PEOI, and make PEOI unique in open education provision.

Other new developments:

New courses started or taken over in July 2011:
– “Introductory Chemistry” by Pierre Karam (faculty #6240)
in English, to be imported from Flat World Knowledge.
– “International Economics” by Steven Smith (staff #6213)
in English, to be imported from Flat World Knowledge.

As in the past, this newsletter will cover
– presentation of new volunteers,
– review of statistics,
– major recent work completed,
– what PEOI is working on now.

PEOI’s “Upload document” procedure can be used to import course pages from open education websites such as MIT, Connexions and many others. Recently, an error has prevented the import of course pages from Flat World Knowledge. Experts in php are invited to join in figuring out how to overcome the error.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

As mentioned above, creating test questions data banks is very important for PEOI. If you are an expert in English language, please visit “List concepts” procedure, read the guidelines, see how it works, and tell me how to make it better. Thanks.

PEOI July 2011 Newsletter

July 11, 2011

Greetings to all PEOI volunteers:

The big news this month is that PEOI has changed its name as you may observe on PEOI’s home page. PEOI’s name is now “Professional Education, Testing and Certification Organization International”. This change is necessary to reflect more correctly PEOI’s mission and what PEOI wants to do. Dispensing knowledge is good, but verifying knowledge acquisition (i.e. testing) is even more important. The new name also places PEOI in category all by itself, and separate from all the other open education websites that do not offer testing and certification. The  acronym PEOI will be retained.

Importing new courses will now be accelerated, in particular from Flat World Knowledge. For instance, PEOI’s course in “Organizational Behavior” had been languishing for several years unfinished. Now Sarita Karanth (faculty #6196) will be taking over the subject by working on an imported version of it. There are several dozens more courses that can be imported from Flat World Knowldge and many other websites, and you are invited to suggest courses to import, that you would like to develop. The beauty of importing courses is that most of the content is practically all written. In many cases, the imported courses have been used in numerous universities, and the authors have benefited from advice from professors who used the courses in their teaching. Nevertheless, the content must be edited, and sometimes restructured to fit PEOI’s online course design specification which is aligned to SCORM online course standards. Specifically, course pages must focus on just one topic to facilitate retention, and that means that lengthy chapters or sections need to be divided.

All these courses with their ready content can be made rapidly available for translation. For instance, the first course on Electric Circuits imported from All About Circuits two months ago, has already been set up  for translation into Chinese, which Muqiu Zhang (faculty #6192) has started. The course has also been set up for translation into other languages. With all the new courses, the volume of translation work is about to explode. I  hope all you translators are ready for it.

Isn’t it great to have so much new work at PEOI: importing courses, restructuring them, writing test questions and translating? PEOI will need a lot more volunteers. If you know where and how to find them, please let me know.

Other new developments:

New courses started or taken over in June 2011:
– “Business Information Systems” by Benjamin Katongo (faculty #6187) in English
– “Organizational Behaviour” by Sarita Karanth (faculty #6196) in English

As in the past, this newsletter will cover
– presentation of new volunteers,
– review of statistics,
– major recent work completed,
– what PEOI is working on now.

A new procedure, “List concepts”, has now been developed; it should make it easier to extract questions from concept summaries. Sentences are dissected to identify what elements deserve to be the subject of questions. Language experts are especially urged to join in testing and improving  the procedure.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

It is clear that PEOI’s work in course development, translation and student advisement is not decreasing. There is more and more to be done. Please, it is not the time to give up on PEOI. Thanks for all you have done already, and please stay with PEOI.

PEOI June 2011 Newsletter

June 8, 2011

Greetings to all PEOI volunteers:

Once again, I must tell you about another important course that has been imported to PEOI. It is “Introduction to Psychology” PS110EN which development at PEOI will be handled by Jena Rush (staff #5265) as you can see below. Of course, PEOI had another course under construction
with similar content. But the text of PS101EN chapters has not been growing lately. I invite all those working on psychology course development (such as Alicia Plaza (faculty #5744) , Ling Ling Tai (faculty #5857) and Christa Cimafranca (faculty #5994) among others) to join Jena in working on PS110EN. There is more than enough do for eveyone in adding assignments, cases, examples, class discussions, review and test questions.

The reason why “Introduction to Psychology” was imported is because of the high quality of its content, as you can verify for yourselves in “List
courses”. This course comes from Flat World Knowledge. It appears that Flat World Knowledge has quite a few other courses available under Creative Commons license. I urge everyone who is writing a course, or plans to do so, to visit http://www.flatworldknowledge.com/ and see if you would like me to import one of their courses instead. PEOI would prefer to develop its own course content. Numerous PEOI’s volunteers have done a marvelous job writing PEOI’s courses. But, if content of high quality already exists, it is PEOI’s mission to offer it to PEOI’s students as soon as possible. Moreover, courses which text is ready, can be given to PEOI’s translation teams.

For any course at PEOI to be developed, there must be a volunteer who is willing to take charge of leading other volunteers in its development. “My discussion” should be used to exchange ideas among members on how to distribute work. For instance, PEOI’s volunteers in the education course development group should see if they want to join Margaret Bell in the education courses she is proposing, as indicated below.

The “Upload images” procedure has been modified to include a few more elements that define an image to upload. One of them is “Anchor location”. If you enter the label of the anchor (which you find in the course page), the HTML tag for the newly uploaded image will be immediately inserted into that course page. All you will have to do then, is click on “Save”. Other new elements define the source. This will be used to make the name of the artist (e.g. you) and/or origin of the artwork to appear in small letters just below each image published on PEOI.

Other new developments:

New courses started or taken over in May 2011:
– “Introduction to Psychology” by Jena Rush  (staff #5265) in English
– “Introduction to Public Health PU1010EN” by Dennis Dantic (faculty #5159) in English
– “principles of ecology” by Eliza Wandera  (staff #6135) in English
– “Educational management” or “Childhood psychology” by Margaret Bell (faculty #6166) in English
– “Spanish as a Foreign Language” by yaoska lorente-garcia (faculty #6167) in English

As in the past, this newsletter will cover
– presentation of new volunteers,
– review of statistics,
– major recent work completed,
– what PEOI is working on now.

Summary of concepts is now being further automated. Concepts are now place in data banks, and can be used to seed review questions
and test questions, as well as create Concept summary pages.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

Please contact other PEOI’s volunteers in your group at PEOI. Tell them what you can do, and learn from them where your contribution can be most valuable. For all technical problems talk to me. But for course development talk to your group. They and PEOI need your help. Thanks.

PEOI May 2011 Newsletter

May 4, 2011

Greetings to all PEOI volunteers:

Graduates of electrical engineering and teachers in this field, PEOI needs you. Two courses have now been imported to PEOI from All About Circuits as you can see in “Courses”. And there are two more courses in electric engineering at All About Circuits that will also be imported,
although these last two courses are missing some of the chapters. Importing these courses was suggested by Salman Quaiyum (faculty #6036)
to whom we are thankful. There are many more open education courses that I urge everyone of you to seek out on the internet. Then determine
if they are compatible with PEOI’s offering: they must be
1- in one of PEOI’s professional discipline;
2- university level with at least 15 chapters and full text;
3- in a format that can be easily imported such as HTML;
4- published under any license that allows redistribution and not be copyright restricted (as all PEOI’s courses are).

Importing a course is the easy part. Now PEOI’s (i.e. your part) real work begins in editing the text, summarizing concepts, seeding and
creating review and test questions, adding cases and lab work, illustrating chapters with examples, assembling references and readings, writing assignments and setting up class discussions. Much of this work does not require a doctorate degree (although such credentials are always nice to have): a good command of the English language and familiarity with the subject are what you need to extract ideas from the text and put them into assignments and questions. So, please, there are several volunteers who joined PEOI to develop electrical engineering course, your time to become active has come: take a look at the two imported courses, decide what you want to contribute, and ask me for guidance if you need it.

In these electrical courses there is some work for HTML specialists who are familiar with math.ml, or who want to learn and use this special
part of HTML code. As you may know, math.ml is a set of HTML tags that allow to show equations and mathematical formulae. Math.ml is used in some of PEOI’s courses, such as in Collaborative Statistics MS312EN. At present, EL110EN and EL111EN contain around 500 images with mathematical writing. Converting these images to math.ml equations would make the writing portable and scalable: thus, a major improvement which PEOI will be happy to share with the original author. PEOI’s HTML specialists are invited to join in this work.

If you have looked at PEOI’s “Courses” section recently, you must have noticed that the listing of PEOI’s offering has changed. A set of courses
that used to be listed as “under construction”, have been extracted and are now shown as “Text ready”. This is useful for PEOI’s students to see
what courses already have substantial useful material. This can also be indicative for new volunteers who want to work on assignment, concept
summaries, reading, cases and test questions: these are the courses that best fit for such contribution.

As can be seen in the new courses, dentistry is finally starting to be present in PEOI’s offering, thanks to Akanksha Gaur (faculty #5696).
PEOI’s volunteers who joined to develop such teaching, should get in touch with Akanksha. There is an entire program of studies to create
in this important field. Other new developments:

New courses started or taken over in April 2011:
– “Electrical Circuits 1 – DC.” by Salman Quaiyum (faculty #6036) in English
– “Electrical Circuits 2 – AC.” by Salman Quaiyum (faculty #6036) in English
– “Human Anatomy for Dentistry Students ” by Akanksha Gaur (faculty #5696) in English

As in the past, this newsletter will cover

Thank you for all this good work. It should be mentioned that this work is only the one recorded when authors, editors, translators and other volunteers are online, make use of PEOI’s procedures, and their work is recorded. It is known that twice as much work is carried out offline, which is not recorded, and we thank those who put in all these efforts.

WHAT PEOI IS WORKING ON NOW

PEOI needs to create a dictionary of math.ml tags to make if possible for anyone not familiar with this code to use it. Tell me if you want to work on this data bank.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

There is a lot to do at PEOI. It will take many more years to do it all. Only with your help can this become the free education that anyone can
benefit from. No matter how much time you can spare, it is appreciated. Without you PEOI can’t exist.

PEOI April 2011 Newsletter

April 8, 2011

Greetings to all PEOI volunteers:

In this newsletter I return to the issue of localization which was touched upon in the previous newsletter. Translators are well award of localization. But localization is not just for translators, and is just as important in any course: it makes concepts relevant to readers with contextual examples; it makes abstractions become real and close to home; and it brings ideas to life. Examples are not just important but outright essential in all courses. Because of the explanatory power of examples in PEOI’s courses, they appear in light yellow shaded boxes that stand out from the normally white background of course pages. For instance, take a look at how Nancy Paz (faculty#6007) gives practical sense to cash reconciliation in Chapter 8 of AC101EN in “Courses”. Nancy has also added more superb examples in AC101EN chapters 3, 9 and 11.
Good job Nancy!

Because of the crucial importance of examples, their insertion into course pages has been made increasingly straightforward. It was shown in last newsletter how it is done in “Import rtf” and “Insert into course page” which you are urged to visit and read the guidelines. Now, inserting examples is also simplified in “Upload document”. Your example must be placed in a file you can write in Word, then open it and save it in rtf format in Wordpad (to remove the troublesome overhead that Word creates). To expedite the insertion of the example in the right place, you should give your file a name constructed as “Exampleanchorxxxx” where xxxx is the anchor label of the concept to which the example pertains. Then, when you upload that file in “Upload document”, you will see that the anchor location will be immediately recognized, and by clicking on “Insert example” the example will be inserted just below the concept. All that is left to do is click on “Save”. As you can tell from AC101EN examples, all the formatting is conserved. In other words, using this method relieves you from any need to deal with HTML. Give it a try. No matter what content you are working on, your examples will be great additions.

Language courses need to have many different exercises: listening to a word and writing it, filling in missing letter(s), choosing a correct answer among several possible alternatives. These exercises are drills in chapter pages, not test questions in automated tests which are developed later when a course is completed. Some of these drills have started to appear in ESL01EN Chapter 1. All these drills can be implemented in HTML. HTML specialists are invited to join in this work in ESL01EN, as well as on other language courses.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

The amount of work done by PEOI’s volunteers continues to be enormous. Yet, there is so much more to be done. If you have not been active in a while, please rejoin PEOI. Do not hesitate to ask me for guidance. Thanks.
