PEOI July 2011 Newsletter

Greetings to all PEOI volunteers:

The big news this month is that PEOI has changed its name as you may observe on PEOI’s home page. PEOI’s name is now “Professional Education, Testing and Certification Organization International”. This change is necessary to reflect more correctly PEOI’s mission and what PEOI wants to do. Dispensing knowledge is good, but verifying knowledge acquisition (i.e. testing) is even more important. The new name also places PEOI in category all by itself, and separate from all the other open education websites that do not offer testing and certification. The  acronym PEOI will be retained.

Importing new courses will now be accelerated, in particular from Flat World Knowledge. For instance, PEOI’s course in “Organizational Behavior” had been languishing for several years unfinished. Now Sarita Karanth (faculty #6196) will be taking over the subject by working on an imported version of it. There are several dozens more courses that can be imported from Flat World Knowldge and many other websites, and you are invited to suggest courses to import, that you would like to develop. The beauty of importing courses is that most of the content is practically all written. In many cases, the imported courses have been used in numerous universities, and the authors have benefited from advice from professors who used the courses in their teaching. Nevertheless, the content must be edited, and sometimes restructured to fit PEOI’s online course design specification which is aligned to SCORM online course standards. Specifically, course pages must focus on just one topic to facilitate retention, and that means that lengthy chapters or sections need to be divided.

All these courses with their ready content can be made rapidly available for translation. For instance, the first course on Electric Circuits imported from All About Circuits two months ago, has already been set up  for translation into Chinese, which Muqiu Zhang (faculty #6192) has started. The course has also been set up for translation into other languages. With all the new courses, the volume of translation work is about to explode. I  hope all you translators are ready for it.

Isn’t it great to have so much new work at PEOI: importing courses, restructuring them, writing test questions and translating? PEOI will need a lot more volunteers. If you know where and how to find them, please let me know.

Other new developments:

New courses started or taken over in June 2011:
– “Business Information Systems” by Benjamin Katongo (faculty #6187) in English
– “Organizational Behaviour” by Sarita Karanth (faculty #6196) in English

As in the past, this newsletter will cover
– presentation of new volunteers,
– review of statistics,
– major recent work completed,
– what PEOI is working on now.

Thank you for all this good work. It should be mentioned that this work is only the one recorded when authors, editors, translators and other volunteers are online, make use of PEOI’s procedures, and their work is recorded. It is known that twice as much work is carried out offline, which is not recorded, and we thank those who put in all these efforts.

WHAT PEOI IS WORKING ON NOW

A new procedure, “List concepts”, has now been developed; it should make it easier to extract questions from concept summaries. Sentences are dissected to identify what elements deserve to be the subject of questions. Language experts are especially urged to join in testing and improving  the procedure.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

It is clear that PEOI’s work in course development, translation and student advisement is not decreasing. There is more and more to be done. Please, it is not the time to give up on PEOI. Thanks for all you have done already, and please stay with PEOI.
